fintail 03-16-2005 06:35 PM

Thanks. I like how they look. Some had told me to go with the 140 style wheels, but I think these look more correct. I don't know of anything I need to do to the car cosmetically now.

We got lucky, :sun_smile

We picked up this 1985 500SEL from my wife’s brother who owned her from birth about two years ago. Only flaws, Missing Tow Hook Cover on front bumper, Seat belt wear on gray leather drivers seat side. Cruise control switch was broken, I replaced that.

It looks blue but it is gun metal gray.

Currently giving me minor problems with a power loss but I will get it! Especially with the help from this site! :)

Roll Call

1 Attachment(s)
A year ago, I became the proud owner of a 'sweet' 1985 380SE, that had only one owner since the original, who kept it garaged. Had only 46K miles- I just rolled over 60K on it myself. Intereior is perfect, no cracks in leather, wood or dash, no rust. It is almost like a new one, although I've had to do a few things like replace the tires, brake linings water pump, and repair the fuel pump relay. this is my first post and I'm looking forward to all the MB discussions on this website. Thanks to all those who built it and make this such a good site!

DickBenz,

Nice ride. Great color and I have always liked the short wheel base 126 cars.

Plus, as a `85 model, it should have the dual chain set up as standard.

Gary Ganaway 04-02-2005 08:09 AM

Just bought a 85 380SE, 94K, all orig, no rust, great shape. No pics yet but will post later. Been looking for 126 but did not want the longer wheelbase 420 or 560 SEL.

1985 500sel Amg

I ran across mine about 5 years ago.... it was a 1985 500SEL AMG Euro so it has the lights with the vacuum aiming and all the lumbar stuff on the seats...the idiot who had it before me tried to paint it over the original wax....so it is now peeling in sheets .... If I wait long enough it will be back to the original color.... It has the original AMG 4 spoke wheels and in Montana topped 165 MPH..clockedby HWY patrol.... Interior is being rebuilt ...all new wood and leather seat covers...working on a couple of small dings... Dark gray with all the air effects and 32 valve engine....AHH forgot ...294,000 original miles and still running strong

I haven't posted here in a while, so here's my 560 after updating to Euro lamps.

Wife hit a deer and did some light damage to the front, so we had the bodyshop swap for the Euros. Fit and finish is near perfect.

126 Owners

I have an ML320, a 76 450SEL and just got a beautiful 89 420SEL in mint condition. Also have a Corvette, so am going to sell the 450SEL shortly; four cars is too many for one person to drive! I love the 420SEL; it was carefully handled by two owners who maintained it at the proper levels -- replacing or repairing everything that needed it. Perfect body and interior. I am looking forward to driving it quite a bit and think we should have a 420SEL "club" within the forum ..... ???

Jeez, I feel like a hill-billy with my rig compared to some of these cherries I see on this thread. Oh well, it's my first one. That's the original antenna in the pic. I'm still trying to get the new antenna mast to retract into the mechanism right. Cost me $35. Probably should've sprung for a $100 used, intact, unit.

Also my first 126. I also have a 123 coupe and a 114 sedan, and have previously owned other 114, 123, 124 and 201 models. I added the Lorinsers right away (still getting used to the chrome) - clear corners are in the mail, euro headlights will be added soon, and maybe some H&R springs.

There is a site just for coupe-lovers at www.mbcoupes.com in case you haven't seen it already. A lot of nice pictures of SEC's on that. Check out the 560SEC Euro Conversion page. How have you liked the 420SEC so far? I'm interested in getting a '90 or '91500 or 560SEC at some point. Any particular problems you've had with your 420 so far? Do you work on your cars yourself?

Photos at www.mbcoupes.com (Members cars Jim Baubel, SF CA)
Co authored with Satish Tummala, site owner, buyers guide SEC/SEL in 1998.
History of car; Built 9-12-90, shipped to LA port Prep center in Long Beach 11/90, sold to CalStar MB,12/90 per DB build sheet from MB archives in Stuttgart; $84,500 MSRP (have photocopy) first owner took delivery 11/23/90 at 7 miles per MB dealer Vehicle Master inquiry, traded in 4-92, wholesaled out to Auto Auction, bought by JEM High Line import dealer in Hollywood, sold to owner of Beverly Hills Hotel 4/12/92 at 24,000 miles, (per conversation with). He sold 2/15/95 because wife thought was too flashy, wanted a BMW, he kept his Porsche. New owner kept it one year (per phone conversation) as interim car till he saved enough for a new SL, then traded
in on a new Silver '96 SL, in July 1996 he was a franchise owner of building cleaning service. Bought by me 11/09/06 with 50166 miles, now has 117400.
Longest I have ever owned a car. Have almost a complete history from new, complete books and all records since April 1992. Even cruise control instruction card that hangs from the steering wheel when new. No major problems to sort other than quirky AC. No accidents or rust. Always a California car; lower panels painted body color and mirrors too. Updated Alpine CD and custom fitted sheepskins, Weathertech mats.

Highly recommend these cars!!:D

I currently have 3 560SEC's that are up and running and have owned a few other coupes over the years..as well as a 560SEL (my first 126)....great cars that are Easy to improve on..

Pictures of two of my coupes can be seen here:
http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/vbpicgallery.php?do=hall&u=16023

More info on the white car can be seen on my webpage.
I would upload a few of my gray 89 coupe but the size limits here are rather low.. I do have some posted in my Benzworld gallery though:)

As Jim mentioned above, these cars are great...Out of all the Mercedes I have owned/driven etc the 560SEC is by far my favourite.

dee, i havent caulculated it yet but i average around 475-500 mi per tank. of course i let it idle for a while before each use to get things warmed up. usually around 5-10 minutes. i mostly do city driving and some highway as i am a highschool student.

next time i fill up ill calculate it and report back to you.

catmandoo62 07-04-2006 12:30 AM

as of today i own my second benz(86 300sdl),the first(90 300ce) the guy could not come up with the title and thank god he didn't,i really liked the coupe but this sdl is in a class by itself, the ride is like floating on clouds, the bank vault doors, rear leg room to no end,and something i will have to get used to is the rear windows that roll all the way down.i should have had one of these years ago.

t walgamuth 07-04-2006 05:26 PM

i have a 1984 500sec. silver with navy leather. second owner. first drove it 80k in 18 years, i have driven it 55k in four. and it is not being driven that much for the last two years. it is pretty nice. one small rust bubble under the ds rear window. a few scuffs and very minor dings. cracked dash. a few blems in the leather. mechanically very sound. no blow by. uses no oil between changes. pretty quick and with regular unleaded not that expensive to operate. cheaper than a diesel on repairs. later headlights... flush type.

i also have a 90 350sdl. black black. maybe third owner. second was a lady lawyer in indy. body very good. no rust. a few dings and dents from its life in the big city. 155k. bought it needing a head gasket. did that plus a complete valve job with lots of new valves and such. runs really sweet now. smooth powerful and quiet. very nice ride. bilstein hd and michelins on aftermarket 15" rims. tight steering, but needs perhaps track bar bushings, as it will rattle a bit over bumps but steers really nice and tight.

really fine interior.

i also had an 84 300sd about ten years ago. it was a very nice car but i kept smelling antifreeze and was convinced i had a pinhole in the evap. so i sold it along to a friend, who drove it for a year or two then sold it along to his step son who drove it another four or five years and never did do the evap. it was silver with gray leather and euro lights.

the 126s are really nice cars. very high quality and very nice driving. not too big even in the sdl version.

My W126

1986 420SEL: Diamond Blue with navy leather interior. A great car: I've known it since it was new, and bought it from the first owner when they did not want it anymore. Most things repaired; sunroof apart right now, waiting on parts. Still a great one: drives beautifully, and idles so smoothly. Quality stands out after 20 years.

I have no idea if I have ever replied to this thread or not.... :)

Anyway, I have a 1985 380SE w/268K miles, 100% rust free, with a nice original interior (MB-Tex), but very faded paint on top, hood and trunk. I have owned it for about a year and have put about 5000 miles on it. It is a "fourth" car, so I do not drive it as much as I would like to. Still on original engine and transmission. Runs and drives good, save for a roughness when engine is cold. ALL electrical still in perfect working order. I am going to replace rear brake pads soon and check for vacuum leaks, but overall, still a good daily driver. Maybe I can put another 50K on it. Well, at least until the timing chain/tensioner/guides/rails break. :)

I've got some 123 cars,of various years, and mostly all in great shape. But I recently purchased my very first w126 car.A 1988 560SEC,AMG,Euro car.The thing is magnificent.Silver w/black leather, and everything under the sun for options.Car only has a mere 4500,yes 4500km on it,which only calculates out to around less than 4000 miles,U.S. or something like that. The car grew up in Canada, and came from the original owner.Sorry no pics, the sight won't take them for some strange reason, even though they're jpeg.I can email them to anyone who'd like to see, just sned me a message at repoman940@aol.com,and I'll have your address to send them to.
