2000 E320 wiper won't turn off
When 1st starting car the front wiper makes 1 sweep and stops with the stalk control in the off position.(or 2nd position). When raining out the wiper will come on and make various numbers of sweeps and will not stop when windshield is dry, with the control off. All this with the control in the OFF position. When in the 2nd position the wiper used to stop after sweeping and drying the windshield. The 3rd and 4th position work as they should.
Is this the control module or rain sensor? If ECM what is the location? Thanks- I searched the treads and could not find any info. 2000 4 matic wagon 154K.

Has the car had a windshield put in? Glass installers not familiar with Mercedes will almost always screw up the rain sensor, assuming they put in a glass compatible with the rain sensor to start with. The overhead control panel is in charge of the rain sensor, though it networks with a few other modules to actually control the wiper. As such, lots of things can be screwing up the wiper operation. The best bet is to pay for a diagnosis at a shop equipped with the DAS tester. This will assuredly be cheaper than throwing parts at it.

I have not put new windshield in, not sure about P/O.
There is a purple rectangle in glass forward of the rain sensor.

It sounds like the rain sensor since it wipes once with the wiper turned off and the key on. Continuing to wipe once it rains and then stops raining is another symptom of faulty rain sensor or blocked sensor eye. Mark

It's likely the Combination Switch that's faulty. They occasionally fail - rain sensors not so much.

Many thanks for the responses
one thing I didn't mention in the original post is that the wiper will eventually turn off after many twists of the stalk, but there is no clear pattern to the behavior.

If you want to replace the switch yourself, goggle for DIY's on 'loose stalk'. You need to remove the steering wheel (hardest part usually) but overall the job is fairly easy if you have tools and ambition.

Got tested at dealership and...
they said it is the switch, not the rain sensor and for $400+ fixed. Looks like my next diy is set. Thanks to all for helping.
