2000 e320 oil usage

My E320 has about 48000 miles on it and uses about two quarts of oil about every 5000 miles. The dealer told me this is normal and normal oil consumption is about 1 qt per 2000 miles. I have never had a car that used this much oil. Is this normal? By the way, it is out of warranty.
