black RTV silicone
Anyone ever use or know of any adverse effects with using rtv silicone on an m103 to seal the valve cover?

You shouldn't need rtv and I'b be worried about stray bits of rtv getting where it shouldn't. RayH |

The gasket is reusable until it hardens / shrinks / crushes out. A small bit of RTV where there are internal corners / 1/2 circle cam plugs is used to prevent weeping.
If you are trying to get a gasket to go one more time, a _thin_ wipe if RTV can be used. However, expect much time consuming clean up when you put the next gasket on. |

Thanks. I just have a few tubes of the silicone and my valve cover is starting to leak. I did use it to seal my thermostat housing and it worked excellent. I will just order the new gasket, I don't wanna spend a bunch of time cleaning it for the next time I need to replace it, plus I don't wanna run the risk of it breaking off and causing my engine to seize. Thanks.

Oh in that case I guess I will give it a go. Do I need to remove the rubber gasket, or do I dab it on top?

Ok, so use the silicone with the gasket?

I just went through this with my indy parts guy. I purchased a valve cover gasket for my 2.3 and it started leaking. So I called him and requested a MB brand gasket. No silicone, just a good rubber to head fit and no more leaks.
Not sure what the brand of the aftermarket one was, but the MB brand has the logo and part number on the edge of the gasket.

valve cover sealed with black rtv silicone, let idle for 15 mins and no leaks. Valve cover was relatively clean too so I didn't need to clean it.
