AT modulator o ring replacement

Hi,
I have a large leak coming from vac modulator area so I thought I would start with replacing the modulator o ring. I have read the posts on how to access the modulator. When looking at it I am not sure if there is enough room to remove the cover and modulator so I can replace the o ring. Can this be done with the trans. on the car or does it require r/r.
