Question 126 - harsh shifts

My '87 300 SDL is experiencing rough shifts. The shifting is not so bad when accelerating hard, but light to mid acceleration is what causes the harsher shifting. I realize "feeling" the shift points in these cars is largely considered a feature. I do not mean harsh like good, this seems somewhat like a clunk. Additionally, the shifts appear to be more harsh when the AC is on.

Thanks.

You have what sounds like a classic vacuum leak. Make sure that the modulator vacuum pipe is clean and free from any holes. Be sure also that the modulator cap has no holes in it.

Benzmac

Would you be kind enough to explain the location of your suggested culprits? Thanks.

The modulator is on the left side of the transmission ahead of where the linkage from the shift lever attaches to the transmission. There will be a vacuum tube coming off the modulator and running up towards the engine compartment.

Sixto - On the left side when facing the front of the vehicle, I assume.

the other left

Chris,

Sorry about that. No. It's on the left of the transmission as viewed from the driver's seat.

another stupid clarification...

Is it necessary to get under the vehicle to reach this modulator, or can it be diagnosed through the engine bay?

You have to go under the car. Get a good set of ramps and make easy work of it.
