ML 350, or 3.7

Which ML has the bad engine? Didn't the 350 have trouble with balance shaft

The early M272/273 powered 164's had the balance shaft/gear issue.

Yes, the 272 has the balance shaft issue, and the 273 has a related issue (crank pulley or timing chain idler gear or some such) even though it has no balance shaft.

No reason to stay away from the m273. It has an idler gear where the m272 has the balance shaft, and the idler gear does sometimes have the same problem with wear of the teeth. However the repair cost on the m273 isn't as exorbitant, it can be done without pulling the engine.

Most MB techs would rather pull a motor to do a balance shaft than R&R the timing chain cover with the engine in the vehicle to replace the idler gear. Re-installing the cover can be a real pain.

For the record, here is the TSB explaining the issue and listing the affected serial numbers:

New to this site so please excuse my lack of knowledge.
I am a brand new first time owner of a72 280se 4.5. I've been getting mixed reviews of this model. It's in great shape with a few minor issues. Anyone have any tips for me about this car?
