94 SL600 slow to engage reverse

on my dad's sl, the car takes several seconds, to enage reverse.

Is there any kind of adjustment that can be made, or is the car due for a tranny rebuild?

Its annoying to put the car in reverse, and have to wait a bit before the gear engages.

The car still drives great, and has no problems in drive or any of the other forward gears with engaging, and shifts excellently when driving. but revers takes what seems like forever to engage.

Anyone have any ideas of where to start looking? the car has to go in the shop anyway for something else, so if it is a simple adjustment or so, I want to have my dad get it taken care of.

IF the reverse clutches aren't worn out then there is a mod that might help the slow engagement. HOW long has this happened? If it just started then the reverse clutches are wearing out.

I'm not sure. I drove the car yesterday to meet up with my father, and I noticed it. I asked him about it, and he said it has been doing it for a while.

I had a Mazda truck do the same thing......and then finally it happened........no warning..........no reverse!!!!! The truck drove fine in forward, but would not reverse. I remember it taking several seconds before the reverse would engage......then "clunk", off I would go. Until one day....I lost reverse. I drove the truck quite a while like this.......parking was always a challange. It even passed our state inspection twice. It's just fine you can fail for a burned out tail lamp, never mind the vehicle doesn't have a reverse gear!!!! Go figure.... However, it sounds like the SL may need a tranny job.:( :(

well he has a 2003 sl on order.. but he might see about an sl55 instead...

So that mean in the next 8 months he should definately have his new r230 sl...
