89 300E ?

My daughter has a 89 300E and she came over to my house because she wanted me to check a few things on her car, when she pulled in my driveway and turned the car off I heard a noise, it sounded like bubbles. Pressure in the antifreeze tank, it was releasing pressure into the other tank that is behind the front quarter panel. Cracked head? Head gasket?

Can you be more specific? Are you referring to the tank that is right next to the coolant resivoir? If so, that is the windshield washer tank, and yes, a hot coolant line runs through it to heat the washer fluid.

Has it overheated?
Don't be quick to assume there's anything wrong with the head. M103s head don't crack really, unless under severe circumstances.

Has the coolant been changed recently? Maybe any pressure in the system (even though probably not, something basic.)

M103 headgaskets do however have a tendency to leak on the passenger side of the block and drip oil. Also mix oil in the expansion tanks, and in some cases leak both ways.

No, not the windshield washer tank. There is a expansion tank behind the passenger side quarter panel. I didn't know it was there until I replaced that quarter panel on a friend's 300E.

No, coolant was not changed lately. No oil in tank.

long time ago I had a similar situation but with another brand of car - the engine was iron block and alu head - the problem was a slightly warped head - I shaved it myself on a sheet of glass and 400 paper.

after that job of removal, decking and reinstall with genuine gasket didnt have that problem.

You might want to start with the cap on the expansion tank, it may have a bad seal.
