300E 5spd Manual tranny fluid

I know this has been talked about before, but I am wondering what they latest opinions were on what type ATF to put in my 86 300E 5Spd tranny. The dealer said Dextron 3 is OK. I asked about type A and got a puzzled look. Any ideas? Thanks!

I'm looking for an answer too, assuming a 1991 190e had the same transmission. I'm due to change mine.

ON the latest MB chart the manual trans fluid is still listed as 000-989-26-03. & that is SHELL ATF type A. Comes only as .5liter & you would need at least 2.5 of them. TRY Mobil 1 synthetic ATF OR Redline MTL or ATF

If you take it to an MB dealer and tell them to change the fluid without specifying type or brand, they'll put in Mobil1 ATF.
