300e sunroof, seal it or fix it?
When I bought my 300E a few months ago, the last owner had the sunroof held on with:
- a few metal strips under the front of the sunroof panel attached to something - and the back side of the sunroof panel was free to flap in the wind (which it did). And there's a block of wood up there too, don't know why. It's a real shabby job and it makes the car not highway worthy. The motor is still up there because I touched the button and I could hear it. I found a local person with a 300E parts car and he's willing to sell all of the sunroof components for $100. But I'm at the point where I think sealing it is the better option. Please any advice would be helpful. Thanks.

Sealing the sunroof makes me think of the cars I see driving around with bathroom caulking caked around the top. The W124 is a fine automobile, and the sunroof isn't that difficult to repair. It shouldn't be difficult to drop the headliner and install a complete used unit. Even if you only use it a few times each year...it's just a tragedy to think how the former owner could do such a thing to such an elegant automobile.
Just my opinion...

Well if the motor is working and the sunroof itself is intact, why not fix it? It's a simple mechanism. Clean the rails, lube the moving parts, check the cable and then put everything together. It takes some patience and about 3-4 hours.
Just fixed the sunroof on my bro's 1977 280E. One of the biggest sunroofs I have ever seen, by the way.

You right TCCBASS, a tragedy.
The car has 190,000 miles and drives very nice. Looks great too. I hope my 300e's former owner treats his newly acquired c280 better than he treated my car. The sunroof is really the half of it. But I like the car and am willing to put time, money, and effort into it; to bring it back to life. Now, back to the topic. Quote:

The lifting angles are often times the culprit on the sliding/lifting roof. These are badly designed and frequently broken resulting in a less than zealous owner abandoning the sunroof. The new parts are not made of "pot" metal, like the originals, and hold up longer. The old style sliding-only roof could be fixed with a good clean, lube and reassembly; the sliding/lifting CANNOT usually. The lifting angles alone are ~ $130 ea. currently, I believe. Dealer charge to repair a sliding/ lifter can run close to $1000 according to some previous posters on the board. (This all assumes you have a sliding/lifter and not just a "slider").
There are lots of good posts on "lift angles" in the archives. Give the "search" a try and see what you are up against and the best repair hints. It's very doable, but not a slam-dunk. Good luck with the project.

Hmm, I have the same problem and the same offer, $100 for the complete sunroof. I am wondering if it would be more feasable to drop the headliner and the entire tray and just switch the metal panels then switch the entire tray out. The lifting angles are a pain in the a** to adjust, my mechanic at the local indie shop cringed when he thought he would have to do it:p Jus' drop it all an switch it out? Sound like a plan??

I am still trying to figure out what's missing up there. Why the block of wood? If there is suppose to be a hold-down rail then that must be missing. I'm also guessing that the panel did have a sliding problem, might be why the wood is up there.
The metal straps are connected to the inside part of the sunroof panel and attached to the car's roof(on the inside). As I said at the beginning of this, a very shabby job, but no real damage so I could repair the sunroof to working condition and it would look fine. So the concensus is go with new parts and fix it? Or should I give the used parts a try? jbaj007, thanks for the search tip. I'm going to be diagnosing this further this weekend once I get my garage cleaned out and the get the 300e inside it.

I bought a piece of wood as well!!!
I recently purchased a 1987 260E with inoperational sunroof and a piece of wood!!!! I'll tell you that the wood is there to hold the sunroof up and to prevent the water from coming through. I learned that by taking the car through the car wash......when I felt water on my neck I looked up and lifted the sunroof slightly and I saw the wood. I took it out and the sunroof lowered too much.......I wish I had some shampoo to wash my hair while I was there!!!!! I found out that previous owner removed the sunroof mechanism for repair (motor is still there and running) but when he found out that it was going to cost him 700 bucks he never re-installed the broken part back in. Instead he installed the wood!! Does anyone have an idea of what's missing in my sunroof?
Thanks and remember.....ALWAYS KEEP A TOWEL IN A CAR!!!

I am hoping myself and a "25yrs of experience as a mechanic" friend can do this job ourselves. But since he's not pleased that I bought this car and he's house hunting, catching him might be a little tough. Anyway, I'm willing to tackle this on my own, if I have to. Just needed some insight from fellow MB owners. Thanks.

Someone in DD did a sunroof delete on a W123 about a year ago. He took lots of pics, so that should help with what you're looking for.
