'86 300E Transmission oil leak
Anyone else seems to have a frustrating transmission oil leak. It seems like every couple weeks I need to put a quart into my '86 300E, and I see it on the ground where ever I go (which I guess has some advantages since I can always find my way home), but I also see it "up in smoke" at times while stopped at a light. Whenever I hear the word transmission, I get nervous. Any suggestions?

I recently had an O-ring go bad inside one of the covers on the side of the transmission on the SDL. It took a while to figure out that the oil was coming from the cover. The O-ring less than $1.00, but it took two tries to get it in right. No leaks since.
The hard part is determining where the leak is actually coming from. I thought at first that the oil pan gasket was leaking and replaced it. The leak did clean the outside of the tranny and I could see where it was coming from by tracing the clean area back to the cover. Yours may not be leaking enough to clean the dirt off the side of the transmission. |

Alot of mercedes leak from the front pump o-ring (up in bellhousing by torque convereter) . If you can get your car on some jackstands and look on the bellhousing and see if you see tranny fluid. If you do a trans reseal might be in order. There are other seals that will leak on it .
