I have a 73 280C with the infamous Solex carb. Alt.auto.mercedes has provided info on repairing, rebuilding, replacing with Weber, etc. Any additional advice will be greatly appreciated since it's getting close to driving time up here in Canada.

Regards,

A.

A good carb rebuilder should be able to do a great job on the original carb so you don't have to go the aftermarket route.

Thanks, any idea what about the cost of a rebuild? I've heard $500-$1000 US which is about 10K Canadian (ha ha).

First of all, what is the car doing that you want to replace the carb?? About half of the time the top of the carb is warped & overhaul is out of the Question. Usualy something else is causing the car to run bad!! The Weber carb conversion is not that good & requires at least $1000.

The following are not my words but do describe perfectly what I am experiencing. I should mention that my car is original and I wish to keep it that way.

Thanks for your interest.

A.

"I get some serious hesitation problems when trying to accelerate. Particularly after the engine is fully warmed up and the choke is completely off. If I depress the pedal too far in trying to accelerate quickly the engine stalls like it's gasping for air,
after a hesitation and some pumps of the pedal, the car will finally begin to speed up. This problem seems to also be engine speed related. A stomp of the throttle at a higher RPM will not result in a stall. "

Sounds like the rear two barrels of the carb are opening too soon, there are several adjustments that can help! Also there is a cam on the carb that might be worn out the helps to open the Secondary air flap & richen the mixture!
