Easy questions on M120
 

Hi there,

I think I know the answer to one of these questions, but not the others so hoping to get some more accurate info from those clever sorts here !! :)

I've marked a couple of area's on the below picture. The one marked 1, I know this is the water pump pulley, but my engine doesn't have that large heatsink looking thing on it, so I'm just wondering if it's required for operation ?? what does it do exactly ??

Regarding the item marked 2, is that the power steering pump ??

We have the alternator and just sourcing the top bracket. It didn't have an airpump and I don't need one. We have an electric power steering pump so wanted to be sure that the missing part is the power steering pump....

It looks like number 1 is the viscous fan hub.
(fan has more of a positive drive to it when warm)

I think number 2 is the power steering pump... Have to double check though.

That's good news as I don't need the fan for our project and of course the extra cost of not having to buy it is always good news :)

I recall someone else on the forum put an M120 into an older SL, and getting the computer to be happy and operate the engine properly was a major engineering project (he was an engineer). I hope you are good with engine management systems and electrical engineering! :eek:

We're using a new Motec M1 ECU which can natively drive all 12 cylinders of a V12 for ignition and fuel so I can't see it being an issue.

Since we're not trying to integrate it into an existing system it all looks pretty simple actually.

I do have another question that's just popped into my head though which is regarding the starter position. The starter can go on either the left or the right side of the engine. Our starter is on the left side as you look at the front of the engine where the pulleys and belt are, but there is of course a big hole on the right hand side of the engine where the space for the starter goes. It there some kind of blanking plate for that side to cover it over or is it just left open ?

There is a plate that covers the hole. The trans bolts hold it in place along with a small allen bolt.

That's the plan.... should be around 1000KG total and has a paddleshift custom sequential transaxle.

It's taken a while to sort, but have found a great company that have made a clutch and flywheel setup to suit so it's all coming together finally.

Now we have a clutch we can make an adaptor plate. This is a mock up transmission case not the final product.

I've just been told by a Mercedes parts dealers that there is no plate to cover it (which I don't believe)......... does anyone have any part numbers I can refer them to ??

Inasmuch as you and your companions are ACE fabricators,
make your own cover plate; 1/4" 304 should suffice.

Yeah that was plan B, but just had an order coming for some other small parts and wanted to make life easier if there was a part I could just buy as we've got plenty of other stuff to be getting on with ..... making up little blanking plates here and there for things just adds up to time wasted if I could easily buy a part, but it's looking like making it might be the easiest way !! :)

If you can buy it, don't build it.

1/4" stainless is way overkill. The stock plate is ~ 16 G cad / zinc plated steel. V8 motors had a similar if not exactly the same plate.

Have a look at a South Atlanta based MB dealer, they have parts manuals on line. The part exists but MB sometimes has a strange way of listing parts.

I did find a cover for the hole in the oil pan / bottom bell housing area 120 014 00 33 $ 10.00

The dual starter mounts are for left and right hand drive cars. The starter was moved to passenger side to make room on the drivers side for the steering box.

Also, I'd really be looking to add a front cage to that frame. All central loads are being taken up by 4 square tubes in the floor / rockers making things pretty flexy.

Consider it a component of the flywheel/clutch containment system.
