New to 97 S320 and have a few ?'s
When I start the car in the morning and drive I noticed it does not upshift as easy as when the car is warm. I revs to 3,000 instead of the usuall 2,000rpm. I remember my 4Runner doing the same to help warm up the car faster. Is this the same?
Also what grade of oil should I use 20w 50? Thanks Ronn |

My 95 S320 is designed to idle fast until the engine warms up a little. It is in the manual. On the subject of oil weight you'll get a lot of opinions, but very few will suggest 20W-50 if the engine is in good shape. Most will suggest 5W-30 to 0W-40. Many will suggest Mobil1 synthetic. That's what I use.

Yes, the engine revs higher in 2nd gear when coolant temp is below 35 D Celsius (722.6 trans), or if engine revs to 3100 RPM. This is done to warm up the cat faster.

Yep, there is an upshift delay valve which delays the shift from 2nd to 3rd, keeping the car at a higher rpm. Lets the catalytic converter to warm up faster to reduce smog emissions.

COOL! I used the search feature and it looks like some dealers don't know what they are talking about

97 140 cars run the 722.6, software driven upshift delay.
I run rotella 15/40 in most 103's and 104's but, it's kinda warm around here 9 months out of the year. Look in the service book, it'll get you on the right path. (unless you have a MM for the car) Joe
