2003 slk230 BAS - ESP light AND Limp mode

I realize that there are a few threads on the ESP BAS lights but my problem is a little different.

I was driving along and the transmission sort of went into neutral It was in drive but when the engine revved it didn't do anything to the speed. I pulled off and as I was slowing down the ESP BAS light came on. I was at idle in Drive and gave it a little gas and it seamed to react fine so I carefully drove it home 10 miles. No problems except the lights on. the next day I started to take the care for a test and the check engine light came on. I did a basic scan that said the speed sensor malfunction. I cleared the code and then started to go for the test ride. NOW the car is in limp mode and won't change gears.

I only have a basic scanner and the only place that has MB specific is to far to drive. I read that the transmission is sensitive to fluid level bit I don't have a dipstick I would like to tell how much fluid is in it.

If I use a wire and bottom it out how far up would the fluid be? this is only till I get the dip stick.

How do I know what transmission is in the car?

Any other thoughts on how to get it out of limp mode to get it to the shop to get the correct codes?

This is my primary driver and would appreciate any help would be appreciated.
