Time to get my A/C back
1988 560SL.
Car is still R12. Apparently the system went low and hasn't been used since 2007-2009ish. I would prefer to keep the R12 as I have a source for some 12oz cans ($25 a can unfortunately). What other items should I have a shop replace? Dryer? Also, I have my MB mechanic who is well versed in SL's, but we also have a local shop that mainly focuses on automotive A/C and has good reviews online. Should I be hesitant taking this car to a non MB specific shop, or are all systems likely the same?

A/C shop probably wouldn't want to touch R-12 because it can "contaminate" their system. I would stick with the mb mechanic. Change out all of your o-rings, receiver/drier and also the expansion valve, all the a/c cut off switches and high pressure switches, check the integrity of the hoses and compressor, and make sure there is oil in it.
