1988 300E dome light

Hello,

I know that the new E-class and C-Class have a "soft dim" for the interior dome light after the doors are closed. Is it possible to retrofit it into a 1988 300E W124? How difficult is it? Can I just buy a part (a relay?) and plug it in?
