Trans swap
Hello everyone I just wanted to ask a question here. I got a 1993 190E 2.6 from a friend and it looks to have had a trans swap done before he got the car and it looks to me like it has a 1990 E300 (Did a Vin. check from tag on trans) trans put in it and the neutral safety switch wire has been spliced to receive the round plug on E300. Is it possible to put the 190E neutral safety switch back on this trans and the vacuum shift control module to make it like the factory 190E?
Any tips/Ideas much appreciated.Thanks Karl In Ga. |

You now have a 722.3 transmission in a 190e 2.6 where previously was a 722.4.
The neutral safety switch is a very simple device. Just leave the round 722.3 one in there. The 722.3 was never designed for the 2.6 engine. Changing the vacuum module around will not make any significant difference. I installed a 722.3 in a W124 260e. I wasn't satisfied with the result and changed in another 722.4. The numbers 722.3 will be stamped on the side of the transmission - although the round shaped neutral safety switch is a dead give away. |

Thank you Ivanerrol... So are the gear ratio's the same? and what is the difference between the vacuum control module's I see black, red and green ones online what one should I use if i need one later down the road. Sorry for all the questions I am new to the Mercedes I am a Tech but new to the EU stuff very new.LOL

The gear ratios are similar but the shift points are different.
The torque converter and flywheel for the 2.6 and different to the 3.0's The 722.3 was designed for a much a higher torque load than the 722.4 and as such is a much heavier unit. The 722.3 must be squeezed into the 190e. Also necessitates a change to the end of the transmission where the flex disc connects the trannny to the drive shaft. The different coloured vacuum modules represent different shift points for different engines. The 722.4 transmission variations were shared by the 4 cylinder engines, some diesels M103 2.6's and M104 2.8's. The 722.3 were shared by larger capacity M103's and M104's as well as V8's. There has been much discussion over the years wondering whether or not a 722.3 would actually fit into a W201. Now we know of at least one. Be interesting to know whether or not the transmission tunnel needed to be modified to fit it in. |

Hello Ivanerrol the trans tunnel has not been modified but it is very tight right by the Neutral safety switch like almost rubbing on the tunnel but not... I can get my finger next to it and that's about it this car had a flash burn happen only melted the grill hood insulation and shift linkage bushing and a few wires and vacuum lines.I will post some pictures. So in your opinion what vacuum module should I use? it seems that most 190E's I seen have the green one? or should I just stick with the one in it now (Black)? If i had the cash i would just stick the 722.4 back in it I am too OCD to have this modified stuff going LOL on but right now I have no choice. Everything else looks stock 190E thats why I had a hard time identifying what was going on with the Neutral safety switch being round and the 190E's I looked at were inline. Oh the bowden cable vacuum line has been bypassed also. The owner that had it before me is a friend and says the car drove and shifted perfect before the burn also.
