W-140 Sunroof Gasket, Metal to Glass conversion Question
Hi,
On my second W-140 Coupe. Love them. 9th year. I couldn't keep these cars alive without all the great information here. Thanks!!! The car in question came from California and was equipped with the metal sunroof. It's a 1995 2 door. I'd like to replace the sunroof gasket because the roof is level when closed but heavy rain allows what I think is too much water into the channel below the carpet. When I first got the car the vacuum/pressure unit under the driver's side rear seat had died from drowning. The car stays out of weather most of the time so it isn't an issue but I still could get stuck in a storm. Looking at gaskets the prices vary and some specify sedan only or glass/metal only. One thing I always wanted to punish myself with was swapping over to the glass sunroof. Is the gasket really different between glass and metal types? Trying to decide if I want to convert now or later : 0 Thanks in advance. Dave W2VW |

Take a look over on B W dot org. There's a bunch of write-ups over there on the swap. See El Rojo's posts / threads.

First have a look at this sites sponsors web site for a parts breakdown. If nothing is forth coming, have a look at a mercedes dealers parts web site in south atlanta. It should show a steel and glass roof parts breakdown.
There should be rubber hoses in each corner of the sun roof tray to drain water. One may be cracked or plugged. When replacing the headliner on Moms 97 C 280 I replaced the hoses as well, they are $ 15.50 each retail from MB. I tried to find the correct ID and wall thickness but noting was forthcoming from my industrial hose vendors. I had looked at changing the glass roof on the C280 to steel to reduce sun load but found an entire assembly would be needed. None were in the local area so I covered the inside with white vinyl. |
