SLK 230 Shock replacement

I just replaced the shocks on my 1999 slk 230 and am having a problem. The post is sticking up into the engine compartment. I can push the post back down but when I bounce the car it pops back out and stays there! They are brand new Gabriel shocks!

What am I missing?

That's most of your problem right there. Never put anything but Bilstien or Boge shocks on a Benz.

Bomeseus, to restore the original ride and handling of your SLK230 it's best to purchase shocks/struts from a MB dealer because they will be built to MB design specifications.

We aren't even into ride quality yet. Need pictures as to what is popping up. Or at least a pic from the net pointing to what is popping up.

If this is built like a similar year C class W 202 , the upper mounting is a vertical bolt with washers and rubber bushings. This type of mounting has been used for decades across many makes.
