Spark plug electrode squished by what????
New to me 89 420. Replaced the Bosch WR8DP spark plugs that were in the car with Autolite 64's which came up as a direct replacement spark plug. The car started and ran fine for about 45 minutes and then a complete loss of power. Pulled the plugs and plugs 4 & 8 had the electrode squished to a gap of.10. The timing chain is stretched to the point that the left side mark on the cam pulley seems to be out by 1 tooth. Replacing the timing chain and valve stem seals is planned. What caused the spark plug gap to be squished and should I be looking at something else before spending the bucks on replacing the timing chain? Compression is good at 140-150 psi on all 8 cylinders.
Thanks! |

A timing chain issue won't cause this. It sounds like you are using protruded / extended nose plugs in an engine that has very little space between the piston and plug tip.
Have a look at the old plugs and compare the threaded length and distance from start of threads to electrode tip. |

1mm difference. And the autolite 64 is supposed to cross reference to the oem plug.

May be wrong plug ,or engine as had a lot of work on it in its life and skiming it as made it thinner .So now you have less gap under plug and piston. You may be lucky that this as not done any damage.

Are these gasketed or taper seat plugs? Autolites typically don't have the gaskets installed when you open the box.
Where is the 1 mm distance difference? |

I never use autolite spark or glow plugs. They are bad for breaking, and inards in your motor.

Spark plugs are dirt cheap. Why would you replace the recommended Bosch plugs with something else?
