dash cluster flashes
 

can somebody tell me whats going on ....i have a 92 400se and when i turn the ign key on the dash cluster lights flash about five times ....im told this meens the cluster is bad is this true....the cluster lights up ok but the only gages that work is the clock and the temp gage.......please HELP if you can THANKS A LOT.:confused: :D :D :D

all fuses and relays are fine:D

I had a 140 chassis that had cluster and pushbutton started freaking out on and it ended up being the wiring harness from starter and alternator was falling apart and shorting, somehow backfeeding to the cluster and pushbutton. We replaced the harness but it was all over for the pushbutton and cluster. This may not be your problem, what is flashing ? Is it the lights on the bottom or the instrument lights?:D

its the instrument lights in the cluster that flash every thing els fine the bottom lights dont flash thay are ok....what do you think could be going on THANKS.:confused: :confused: :D

From what it sounds like , it would take a wiring diagram and some diagnosis. You might want your favorite shop to look at this before buying a cluster.:D

That is a common problem on early W140 chassis with "analog" gauges. The problem is in the MOTHER board that the gauges plug into. AT dealer only option is for complete inst cluster replacement. However there are VDO repair shops that can repair the board for $300-$500.

do you know a good VDO repair shop i can take it to .....THANKS AGAIN:D :D :D

I had this same problem on my 1992 300 SE. It is the motherboard. I was able to get it fixed with a 3 year warranty for $450.00 by ProgRama--they have a website and they are out of Boca Raton, Fl. Service was super fast--sent it out from Washington D.C. on Saturday afternoon by FEDEX and I had it back on my doorstep on Tuesday afternoon!
