what is the maximu timing chain stretch ? 500 SE
HI All
on a 1991 Mercedes 500 SE, Is it possible for the timing chain stretch to be 15 degrees? with both the cam timing marks spot on the pulley shows 15 degrees. the car lacks a lot of power , and can hardly move, yet the engine starts and revs ok, slight miss can be heard. I read on this forum that a maximum chain stretch is 11 degrees. so it seems 15 degress is possible ? , and obviously taking it pass the safe point any thoughts? C |

You need to roll in a new timing chain , ive seen 15 degrees of stretch , I usually change when I see 7 degrees of stretch

You will notice 6 degrees of stretch will it run smoother after a new chain is installed you will also notice more torque, unless you change all gears you may not see 0 degress with new chain may see 2-3 degrees with only a chain renew, I recently did a merc 4 cylinder and found balancer shifted from a true 0 degrees was off by 5 degrees, but this isn't common on your motor
