w124 300TE idling

My car, a 1991 300TE runs great. With one exception. When it starts the idle jumps to one thousand RPMs and stays there until I lift the air cleaner canister and press on a small switch (an action which I believe is supposed to be done by the throttle linkage). When I touch the switch, the idle drops to normal and all is well until the next time the engine is started. Anyone seen this before? And how did you correct it?

Thanks...in advance.
