722.605 overhaul
Next year I'd like to buy a newer low mileage trans,to remove guts, and put into to mine.Mine is a 722.605,I saw somewhere where a guy used a w220 trans to do that.I wonder if the Chrysler Mopar Nag 1s are really in fact 722.6xxs. If so can I use one of them,as they might be more of them?My trrans is fine, but I like to make it new, with my newer engine.

well it seems the only difference is the convertors. They also sell high performance clutches, that are thicker.

The size of the planetary carriers and resultant gear ratios can be different, and a stock module wont be happy if you mis-match.

Any of the W5A330 should interchange. I wouldn't open one up and reassemble it with the old sprags.

I see alot of low mileage 722.605s but I'd be concerned about seals and gaskets.these trans are to expensive from sun valley

Nathan,
I wrote about it on the W140 Benzworld forum, yet it has worked fine on V12 and V8 engines. I have never done it on a I6, and cannot say how many pinion gears W140 M104 722.6 equipped cars uses? As the M112(V6) use three, the V8/V12 use four, so in my book it is a matter of comparing the front and rear replacements shafts in the transmission of your car to the different flavors of the W220 or the +2000 W210, and again I do not know how many pinions it has(I6 722.6 cars). I used at minimum the rebuild kits from many suppliers, and they work well. They are around $200, but the ideal is to use Borg Warner machined frictions or Mercedes frictions not the stamped frictions in the kits. You will need a new Bonded front piston, two new updated sprags.I use CVC torque converters as they use Sonnax parts in them. The wisest thing is to get the re-builders manual on the 722.6, and look at some YouTubes. New revised 722.6 service manual - get it while can - Mercedes-Benz Forum You want to replace all the seals... Martin |

what are sprags? I see rebuilt valve bodies for sale $500.Are they needed too. I have had problem for 4 years now. When my engine is between 50c and 70c the rpm will rise up and down 200 rpms when giving light throttle, til she's warm.I think its a solenoid. They ****ed up the log in at Benzworld so I don't use it much now.

Sprags are on direction bearings-meaning they freely rotate one direction and the other direction they lock hard, but the 90's 722.6's have a 9-element(or so), and the +2000 722.6 have like 12 to 14 element(or so). Then the third-generation of the 722.6 has a larger sprag. There are two sprags most people lose the first one(if they lose a sprag), and the physical worst case symptom is the tranny slips to neutral to after third gear..
That raise in RPM is common on the 722.6, and you could need a new regulation spring, and new valvebody shift sleave(s) which I'm assuming it is 2-3 shift, but this may be masked by slipping front sprag too. Regulating Pressure Control Valve Spring - 68942-01 - Sonnax This a whole kit for all the shifts valves Master Overlap Control Valve Sleeve Kit - 68942-05K - Sonnax I think you have a 98 or 99 car. I cannot remember, but you could swap the valvebody on a +2000 car(any engine-even from a Chysler, or jeep) with yours. The transmission computer(TCM) of 98's and 99's should work with no problem.. My 98 S500 has a 2004 W220 S430 100,000mile internals. I did not change frictions, nor did I changed the sprags. I did it to prove the concept, and works fine. I have loged 30,000 miles since I did it, and I have the 2004 valve body in my 98 with a 98 TCM(my TCM has a 97 date code.). All I changed were all the seals from a TransTech $100 kit from R/O/C/K/A/U/T/O. I did put a rebuilt $200 CVC torque converter.
