Question Brake Pad warning light - Other causes

Car: 1992 500 SEL (140 Chassis)

The Yellow Dash Warning light for brake pads comes on for several days, then goes off for several weeks, then comes back on again.

Does teh dash board light mean anything other than low brake pads.

When the light comes on, it is brigfht when brakes applied, and flickers or is out when brakes are not applied.

Sounds like the system is working fine, and the brake pads need replaced.

Now the gotcha - all four sets of brake pads, all brake pad sensors and all four rotors have been replaced 10,000 miles ago (8 months). And all appear well today!

The light didn't come on until last month, then went off for several weeks, then on for a day, and currently off. (Brakes went 7 months with no dash board lights light.)


Could this have anything to do with the parking brake - last brake not changed.

Were the brake pad wear sensors replaced? Sounds like you've got a bad one somewhere.

There are 2 types of wear sensors, and one has a higher temp. capacity. I didn't know this until I had my 500 out on the track, and after 4-5 laps my pad light came on! At the end of the session I popped a wheel off in the paddock, and found I'd roasted ALL of the pad sensors, such that the wire coating had melted off and the wire within was grounding out to the metallic brake pads.

The pads are the only things that'll illuminate that particular warning light-good luck

Did you check the brake fluid reservoir?

Thanks for the suggestions.

It may have been water (snow) that has been "shorting" the sensors.

at the price of sensors, I'm thinking of replaceing the sensors.

You've got to watch your routing on sensors, they will hit the wheel and ground out.

Problem Solved

The front sensors melted.

Could the cause be that these were not MB products?
