500E, rear suspension noise (still looking)
I'm still trying to find and cure the rear suspension clunk on my 93 500E. The noise occurs only under 40mph and while going over bumps. I have replaced the sway bar link, air cell, hydro strut. All of the bushings look fine. Have tightened all fasteners and checked and cleaned the e-brake parts. I'm told by a tech who looked at it to offer a second opinion, that the noise does not occur in reverse. It is an intermittent noise, never at highway speed. Ideas?

...perhaps you may try relieving the trunk of spare tire, tools, etc. and test again as one of these items may be the source
>if you have a CD player mounted in the trunk, you may wish to check if the mounting are tightened properly >also, if your spare is not tightend down, this may be cause of the clunking as you go over bumps >on a more technical note: you may also wish to inspect: rear subframe bushings, rear chassis mounts/ supports, exhaust system hangers (rubber donuts/ metal ears) hope this helps, and let us know what turns out -fad |

Thanks fad- I have checked all of the areas of potential concern you listed in addition to the half-shafts and wheel bearings. All of these including bushings look fine.

No problemo-
How many miles do you have on your '93 and are you the original owner? if you have printed records, perhaps another repair may be a clue to this condition? (accident repair?) -fad |

44,000 miles, I am the second owner, but researched history prior to purchase. No repair history significant to this problem.

...perhaps one of the 'good looking' bushings may not be adequately performing their duty?
or perhaps, one of the replaced parts is faulty never overlook the obvious....recheck and then look even closer I find repeating this mantra and implementing it usually provides an end to the non-obvious/ fleeting issues good luck and please let us know how things turn out ...have you signed into the 500e/e500 Roll call thread? search on 'roll call' if you'd like to be entered into the 500e roll call database of ownership tks-fad... |

Thnks for the encouragement fad. cannot count how many times I have jacked up that corner and removed the wheel to shake things. Most others who ride in the car do not even hear it, but it is the only flaw in an otherwise flawless car and it drives me crazy. Is there one of the many bushings or control arm links that most often wears?

briefly read the post but have someone or yourself stand on the rear doorsill of either side and bounce up and down while you are underneath the back of the car listening.
