Somebody told me that some shops use this type device to suck out the oil from the dipstick rather than removing the engine cover below and draining the oil thru' the oil drain plug. Seems to make the job easier...no crawling beneath the car, no ramps, less work, and less messy. any down side to this technique? Thanks for your comment.

Yes!! Since the car isn't in the air many things that normaly could inspected, WON'T! As far as getting out all of the oil, the oil sucker does a great job. So use the oil extractor to suck out the oil & lift the car to do the rest of the work!

MB DOC,
How about as a tool for an individual to do "in-between" oil changes themselves? I have seen some private-use models advertised with a 6.5 liter capacity. Is that enough to drain say a 92 500E (or most other MB models) in one sitting? Do you feel there are any advantages to sucking out the oil through the dipstick tube or draining it from the bottom of the pan? (aside from the inspection thing) I've heard the old tale of how the drainage method removes all the sludge, how the plug is magnetic and gets the metal shavings, etc. How much validity is there to that tale regarding MB? Do you recommend any particular model for this application?

Thanks...Lee

I've used the oil extractor for years at the dealership. On most cars you remove more oil with the "sucker". On the new truck (ML320) it is impossible to drain the oil w/o making a mess! Remember to check the complete car any time or way that your car is serviced.
