Does piston slap reduce as the engine warms up?

There is an upper banging noise, knew when bought, but never heard the engine run (plan was to swap in an OM617a).

Now wondering how long an engine can last before it will no more. Now having driven it, find the performance astounding and that is on local road, plus got cut off by some ding bat.
