Question on 1990 300e transmission...
My '90 300 E has the trans that starts in second gear for economy purposes. I have been told that it is an easy job to swap my trans valve body for a later unit that will start in first. Can this swap be easily accomplished?...is it a just drain the trans, drop the pan and swap one valve body for the other and button it all back up? Sounds too easy...

Second gear starts are not economical.
The VB controls the shifting, I would venture to guess a later W124 E320 VB would work. Give it a try and let us know.

The 124.034 cars (400E, E420) have first gear start valve bodies. They do drop and swap. When I swapped one into my wagon there were a few quirks but 1st gear start far outweighs them. I eventually built another trans and made my own first gear start valve body. Its a nightmare. Don't even try, just swap an .034 V/B and live with any quirks.

What about the W124 24V cars? I read they late ones start in first (E320s)... but are they still 722.3 or .4 then?

The .032 (93-95 E320 RWD) should have a first gear start 722.3. I think the 2.8 variants have the 722.4.

You can also do it electronically. The '84 and '85 500SEL and SEC's had a first gear start module. I have collected all the parts to put in my 260E but I'm waiting until I need to do interior work to combine jobs. A switch could be installed in the shifter escutcheon to give you the option of switching between 1st or 2nd gear start. First gear start is terrible if you have snow in the winter.
Do a search for the control module 002 545 41 32 to get more info. |

Jay, at a stop shift momentarily into "2" then back to "D". When you accelerate the transmission should start in 1st gear, at least that's the way our 1991 300CE transmission reacts. Granted it's a pain to constantly shift to achieve 1st gear starts, but you will likely find that 2nd gear start is tolerable in most instances.

Use to be a company which sold a kit which would get these to start in first, and you could program the 2 - 1 speed. Sampled the pulses from the brake sensor, and you could program the chip with your computer. Worked by completing the downshift circuit at the accelerator pedal. Company called FSS switch. They are gone. Thought it would be a cool idea for my S500. The best idea for the S500 is to buy the v-8 (5 liter boys and girls ) in the first place. If you race someone and they win, simply point the S500 in a TBone manuever and they will cry Mama and slink home.
