Error code 135 on a W202 C43 AMG

Yesterday, I did a scan of my W202 C43, as I have some small problems with the Xenons cutting out and came up with error code B1400 which identifies a faulty ballast. It could also be a bad connection. Need to check that first.

There was another code identifying a problem area in the transmission. The error code is 135 with the info of the Siemens TCU module 021 545 87 32 located in the passenger footwell. I tried erasing the code with no success. The module shows the software version from 09/98 and hardware version 21 whatever that means.

The transmission works fine. A year ago I changed the electronic conductor plate, changed the harness plug (no leak), flushed, changed filter and filled with appropriate Fuchs Titan ATF. I erased the error codes at the time and every thing has been working perfectly since

Any ideas what's wrong?

Wow that looks interesting info. I'll look at it later when I get back home.
Thanks very much 😎

Plenty of info and did find error 135 in there. However, the error code sends you to:

Valid for diagnostic version
2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 13, 20

CAN: Engine management
communication faulty

See DM, Engines

The scan results also mentioned "diagnosis detection = 2/3". That does indicate two diagnostic versions from the list above. No idea where to go from here.

Perhaps I can try again erasing the error code or just let things go as the transmission works perfectly.

What do you say?

That TCU is dated 98W53 , from all the other ones I've looked at, this would read 1998 / 53 rd week. 5WK33987 seems to be an internal Siemens number .

The F after 5WK33987 means it was flash programmed. This is typically found on replacement TCU units that are blank when made then programmed as needed. Given your car is an AMG, it is likely they programmed as needed due to low volumes. EGS51 is Electronic Gear Switching , type 51 ( or at least something close to that ) Later units were EGS52

What is the build date of your car?

The 135 error code is coming up "Intermittent fault: CAN engine management communication faulty". CAN ( Controller Area Network ) is a 2 wire communication system invented by Bosch in the mid 80's. The is how various modules communicate with each other. Pull up a tech paper on CAN as it is common across many auto brands and industry.

If the TCU was not talking to the engine computer, you would not get any shifts. I'm not sure how it would react to a momentary loss of communication.

A side note, the 2 wire system is redundant and is designed to work on one wire. The signals are differential , when one line is high , the other is low. This negates the effect of noise.

09/98 would be September 1998 , hardware version is just the revision level of the circuit board.

Also, the latch on the K11 box is open. ( I don't know what the K11 does. ) The right side should press in and pull the connector in. I'm surprised it even makes contact.

Many thanks for the explanation. I can now understand things a bit better

Build year is 1999. Delivery date as per VIN control in the EPC is March 5, 1999 and road registered on March 16, 1999

I'll look and check the latch on the K11 module, but I didn't touch it when I removed the panel from the footwell.

If I remember the K11 is the ESP (electronic stability program) module. No error codes detected or warning light for ESP.

Hello DRBC43AMG,

I have exactly the same problem on a CLK 430 (error 135).
Please, did you find the solution ?

Thanks
