722.4 to 722.6 upgrade

I have an early 96 e320 with the 722.4 trans that needs to be replaced. Im having a hard time finding one, But im finding alot of 722.6 transmissions. If i wanted to upgrade to the 722.6 trans, what all would i need? Or is it better tobjust get another 722.4?

Have a look on car-part.com for a trans.

The .6 is electronic controlled so you will either have to swap the engine computer + bunches of wiring or use a stand alone trans computer. Have a look in the performance section for a poster named whipplem104 .

The stronger alternative to the 722.4 is the .3; using it will involve the least work, as compared to the .6.

It might cost you less to get a car with a 722.6 than to swap a 722.3 into your car. The transmission is pretty much plug-n-play. You’ll have to make decide how to connect the large flange 722.3 to what I’m pretty sure is a small flange diff. Not rocket science, but not off the shelf parts.

I’ve got a good transmission laying on the shop floor. I obtained the car for the good transmission, removed it, scrapped the m104 W124 sedan from which the transmission came, and then ended up not using the transmission as expected. (The oil pan from the m104 did come in handy though.) So I’ve got this transmission I’m not afraid to ship, and need to help make the rent.

Interested?

It was a high mileage car, but ran well.

You can probably find one closer, but I thought I’d start the conversation.

What does the 210 722.4 have for a speedo drive? A 722.3 from a 202 might be more easily adapted if there’s such a thing. Maybe a C36 box?

Edit - scratch that. 93-95 300E/E320 (not 2.8) have a first gear start and electronic speedo. Should be as close a match as any.

W202 featured 722.4's. Speedo read off the diff - not the transmission.

I.M.H.O. Last year I had problems with a 722.4. I looked around for a replacement. Very scarce and the ones that were available had high K's and were likely to fail some time in the future. It's either a rebuild or buy another car. 722.6's can be transplanted - there are available kits but the cost and trouble doing it are outweighed by just buying another car.

Correct speedo signal is determined by diff ratio but for 722.3 and .4 the speedometer cable attaches to the transmission.

My '96 W202 C200 M111 722.4 transmission with electronic speedo is fed from the diff. So is the '94 C180 M111 722.4.
Don't know about U.S. models

Earlier W124,W201 and W126 models fed from the transmission manual and electronic.

My apologies then. I guess it’s further back than my memory serves that I was under a ‘94 C220 with 722.4.

97 C280 / 99 C230 with 722.6 have electronic speedo through CAN bus.

Speed CAN message is generated by the ABS / ASR module using ABS wheel speed sensors. It is somewhat unclear if the speed CAN message is an average of all wheels or a specific wheel. I'd tend to think is is an average / highest speed to allow speedo to operate if a sensor is lost.
