Flashing Low Level Fuel Warning Light

Have never seen this before...

210 chassis E320T... had to replace a faulty fuel level sender because the fuel gauge was indicating a fuel level... required part # 210 542 45 17.

Straight forward replacement... following installation of the new sender, the tank's fuel level was correctly displayed. About an hour there after the low level fuel warning light in the instrument cluster started blinking rhythmically about once every half second. Turning the ignition off extinguished the light and it did not recur with an engine restart.

The flashing did occur infrequently prior to replacement of the level sender and I was hoping that a new sender would eliminate the problem. Any idea as to whether this flashing represents anything in particular or is the result of an existing fault, such as an intermittent ground?
