Is there a reasonable way to retrieve codes and access the computer information? I know that MB uses some special software and computer, but is there something good and economical for diyers availabe out there?

The 1996 & later cars use ODB2 scanners & they can range in price from $250.
THEY will access the the MB computers, the connection is inside of the car under the steering column.
