Quality of chain shops are wildly variable. I really doubt that they are going to rebuild this unit on the bench and will just source one from an off the shelf rebuilder. This isn't a bad thing, many shops source off the shelf rebuilds due to the complexity of a modern transmission ( or in your case, obscure ) and the lack of a trans dyno.

Sun Valley in CA is the go to place for a rebuilt unit, be sure to find a good shop that is willing to install it before purchase.

Running out of fluid a lot. When out of fluid, ceases to work. Now happened again twice in one week. Sure that by now I did some damage to it. 138,000 miles.

Why not fix the leak? If it's leaking that bad it should be pretty obvious where it's leaking. When the fluid runs out, it basically just quits working. If it's been working normally when you add fluid, the internals of the transmission are probably fine.

I have heard ONLY POSITIVE stuff from those places. I do my own trans work, so I have no personal experience.

FWIW, you could have a loose pan. Loose drain plug. Leaking cooler hose. Lots of easy spots you may be leaking. With 138k, the trans is fine inside. Last one I tore down had 270k and you could still read the MB ink on the B1 and B2 bands as well as the K1 and K2 drums. Reverse clutches were nearly dead, as to be expected. Otherwise, trans was good to go. Meaning, I would have it pulled, replace reverse, resealed, and install if I was you.

One of our members here runs a top flight shop in on that coast from memory. He is an early AMG junkie, I will find his info and post it. Crap, he is in GA. Sorry. Maybe he knows someone up your way.

Sort of, a major / fast leak won't cause damage unless the engine is run for long periods of time after the car stops moving. ( the front pump bushing / converter hub will suffer. )

A long slow leak will cause trans damage because it will still drive but shifts will be soft / drawn out due to low line pressure.

The car needs to go to a non chain store mechanic familiar with transmissions. ( does not need to be a Mercedes person. )

There was still plenty of fluid left. The tranny is shot. Now looking for a rebuilt one.

Sun Valley is sending a new one, found a shop to put it in for $900. Sun Valley had a really good deal with $1,750 plus $300 shipping (including torque converter), they pay for the return of the core. So all in all I am paying $2,950 for the whole thing. Plus a rear oil seal. Not too bad...
