'96 W210 E320, Cruise Control doesn't work

Hello All,

Thanks for the help with my recent ignition 'fault'.

Now the Cruise Control doesn't work. It did, on a 60 mile journey just fine. After clearing out the EGR pipe and replacing a few bulbs, it doesn't. There is a new Cruise Control Switch/Turn Signal Switch combo in place, makes me think they were trying to find the fault. Previous owner had a blow out, and so one of the rear tires is new; I've read that can cause this problem, but I would think if it were ever fine, it would Always work and not intermittently. AFAIK, the brake switch works fine, will verify soon. Also will verify the fuse didn't blow. ANYthing else I should consider?

The Brake Light Switch appears to work normally, at least the lights work as they are supposed to.

All Fuses ahead of the driver are good...

I have a '98 E300; it's a diesel. When my brake light switch went bad, I lost my turbo and my cruise control. I think the brake lights still worked.

Thank you; I've been wondering if there were two connections made when that works, or just one. Sounds like two.

We've ordered a new switch, hopefully that is it.

Well, looks like it won't start now with Either key... SO, I am thinking it needs another ignition tumbler/ ignition switch, or the K40 has died.

Any thoughts?

if the cruise control malfunction is caused by the tire change, it can manifest
the symptom intermittently: tire pressure change, speed (there may be others)

Yes sir I did; sorry for the lack of reply until now.

Turns out my partner didn't realize that one has to use the throttle liberally when starting this car... Figured out that the Coolant Temperature Sensor is off by about 400 Ohms when at 100 F. Replacement to go it soon, should affect starting a lot, but I Doubt it will help the cruise control (even though the cruise and idle appear to be in the same module).

I replaced the ECT, the plugs and the wires (original, 226k), and while it is better, it still not right. I’ve read many folks had issues with the K40 relay so I’m going to take mine apart and have a look see.

Put four new tires of the same make and size on your car. That will solve the cruise control problem.
