dashboard outdoor temp

Re: Outside temperature indicator on the dashboard. Consistently reads high, ie., Today it read 87 degrees in early morning, when it was about 65 degrees outside. (not in sun)
How serious a problem is this? Is the gauge just a convenience, or is it an indicator of some other problem?

Thanks, Frank

Check the temperature reading late at night to avoid the sensor picking up hot driveways, hot radiator, etc. If it is still 20 degrees off, it is probably the sensor. Do a search on this subject and you will gain a lot of knowledge and part numbers of the actual thermistor that you can get from an electronics distributor to splice into the existing wiring with a big $ saving.
It is simply a temperature display to let you know what it is like outside, nothing more.

Speaking of the outdoor temp, has anyone adapted the newer (210 & 124) temp measurers to a 123? I would like to have one in each of my 123s, but not sure if it would work.

Thanks for any advice.

Thermistor

Hi Ron,

Do you where can I buy thermistor in the bay area?. Thanks in advance.

ronald_m 06-15-2002 01:59 PM

Fastlane sell them..

Like dweller, I'd like to retro-fit the OTG to my W124 E200.
It isn't standard on this model in England.
M-B UK apparently wants about £150 (about $230US) for a kit, but I don't have the part number.

Maybe even with shipping from the US to UK it would be cheaper.
Anyone know if this can be done, or what the part number is?

Cheers all.

Thermistor

Nope they don't have it at fastlane.

jsmith 06-15-2002 09:54 PM

order it at newark electronics but order 2 or more because there is a minimum order and you can mess up when you solder the thermistor...

On my 92 400E, the outside temp display is blank. It lights up with the lights on but there is no numbers or anything there. Its just blank. I took the dash out and everything is plugged into it. I also check the temp sensor wire that goes to the licsense plate, and everything seems fine. All the fuses are fine too. What could it be?

mine was blinking in and out, seemingly with changes in temp/humdity. i changed the thermistor last month and it didn't seem to change things then suddenly, last week it just started working properly. if you want to check the sensor, disconnect the cable at the junction by the fuse box. i found mine underneath the fuses (you have to open up the fuse box). it's one of those two-wire clips with a green and a brown wire. connect a 3k ohm resistor across the terminals and you should get a reading on the lcd.

C to F

I have a euro 190 16v. Does anyone know of a easy/cheap way to convert from celsius to fahrenheit? I am tired of trying to do the mental conversion in my head.

Thanks

Ron Johnstone 06-17-2002 12:06 PM

I also have a celsius readout and while you would think they would have built in a switch or a terminal change to convert the reading to F, they didn't! Dumb!
Either live with it or get a F readout from a junkyard.

NEWARK PRICE

Joe,

The price at Newark is almost $10 a piece. Assuming you order 3 on the safe side that will be $30 plus shipping. I wonder how much a new set would cost at the dealer....

jsmith 06-17-2002 01:02 PM

i ordered the Thermometrics #EC95F302W which is $3.75 each. where do you see it for $10? order two and it's only $7.50 plus shipping.

http://www.newark.com

you can't order the themistor at the dealer but i believe the sensor with the wire harness is about $80.

Ron Johnstone 06-17-2002 01:33 PM

You can buy the Thermometrics sensor from Mouser Electronics, www.mouser.com under the new p/n RL1003-1746-97-D1 for $2.27 each or $2.06 in qty of 10

Since this is an ongoing need for the community, how about FastLane or someone stocking these?
