190D 2.2 Advice Please

84 2.2 190D

Does anyone know:

Can I roll a new timimg chain in?

Should I try a new tensioner ($40) first, and will anything fall into the pan (or apart) if I pull the tensioner to inspect it?

Thanks

OK, I guess I'll just try it then. The worst that can hopefully happen is I will have to tear it apart. I got the chain and tensioner so I'm gonna have a stab at rolling it in. I will search through here to find out if I should leave the tensioner in while I roll it in.

Also, this car has is a 5spd and has an oddball balancer on the front of the driveshaft that is broken, but Benz won't sell it without the front half of the shaft, which is $800 for the assembly.
Has anyone ever eliminated one of these things and just balanced the shaft? Thanks.

You could try reposting this on the Diesel Discussion board. It might get a better response.
