Car wont turn off...........

I have a 300sd, I crank the engine fine, but when I go to turn it off, it doesnt, I have to go under hood and press stop. I think it has to do with the key because there is some slack.

one of the vacuum hose in your engine bay has come loose or broken.

Either that or the vacuum pump on the front of your engine is shot.

I guess it could be a bad diaphram on the fuel injection pump to !!

I think your right, cuz I saw a random hose in my engine bay that was disconnected completley. It said fuel/emissions or somehing on it. Where does it go?

anyone? I need to drive it to school. Did search On diagram, but I couldnt find what I wanted.

How about a little help from you? Can you tell us anything more about the hose other than that it's random? Is it loose at both ends? If not, what's the other end attached to? What material is it? What color is it? How big is it?

If everything works but you just can't turn off the engine then you should be able to get to school, pop the hood, and press the stop lever.

loose at both ends, its the rubber, its black and its about 1/2 inch. It says Fuel/Emmission on it, Its a little longer than 1 1/2 feet.

There is a round metalic "engine shut off valve" attached to the back of the fuel injection pump. this valve has one vacuum connection that should be attached to a black rubber connector.

A plastic vacuum line (brown or brown and blue) should go from the black connector to a grommet passing through the firewall (steel panel) to the rear of the ignition switch. If the line has come off, reconnect it.

Caution: if the line is intact, the rubber diaphram in the shutoff valve could be leaking which may cause engine oil to be sucked into the vacuum system causing further damage. I suggest you do not use the car until you find and repair the problem to avoid more damage. Check to make sure that the vacuum take offs on the large vacuum pipe from the vacuum pump to the brake booster, are clear and have vacuum present.

That's a spare piece of fuel line, who knows what it's there for.

The fuel cutoff line is brown with a blue stripe, and there is a brown plastic line attached to the maine vacuum line from the pump (in front of the IP -- the IP (injection pump) is were the stop lever is) to the key switch.

If the brown line is broken, disconnected, or the rubber connector is off or cracked, you may not have enough vac to pull the shutoff down.

The shutoff solenoid can be bad too.

To check find the cutoff solenoid (metal canister with black rubber hose bit around an inch long and a brown plastic line with blue stripe attached). Pull the rubber connector off, push the stop lever down, and cover the fitting you pulled the hose off with your finger. Let go of the stop lever and see if it stays down. If not, the solenoid is bad, you need to get it replaced. If it does stay down, you have a vac problem. Check the brown line for vac by pulling the connector off the main line. Be careful not to break the plastic, ti's probably brittle. If you can put your finger over the fittgin and feel vacuum, there is something wrong with the line or keyswitch. If not, you have either no vac (and mo power brakes) or the fitting is plugged. YOu can clean it wil a small wire.
