Hi,

I own a 1978 280 SEL (W116), and live in the UK. Next year, leaded fuel will be withdrawn from sale, leaving me in the lurch ! Can anyone give me advice on whether my car (done > 100,000 miles) can run using unleaded ? Does any work (timing, valve seats etc.) need to be done ? Thanks in advance.

PS The engine no. is: 11098412038453

Lets start with the ignition timing, if you can purchase unleaded fuel with the same octane rating as leaded then it will be O.K.
Mercedes suggests that cars designed for leaded fuel should have the valve adjustment checked more often, when operated on unleaded fuel. You shouldn't have to do any major engine work & everyone can breath easier!
