M103 hydraulic lifters

I would appreciate if someone would explain the "Proper" workings of the hydraulic lifters located in the rockers. I'm installing new ones, so I know I should pre-load with oil. Should they be stiff with no give after loading? Do they "give or compress" somewhat while opening the related valves. Also describe proper way to pre-oil. I hope the tiny little ball in the bottom end has something to do with it. I think I'm filling them ok, just wondering if they should have any give to them as they do before oiling. In engine operation, surely the oil cycles in and out of them somehow. Please explain. Thanks.....

Each lifter has a very minimal amount of leakage and will compress under pressure albeit relatively slowly. In normal operation oil pressure pushes the lifter out of the rocker until it contacts the valve. When the valve opens it happens so quickly that the lifter doesn't have time to bleed down thus it acts as if it were a solid body. Any small loss of oil out of the lifter is refilled before the next valve actuation.

I wouldn't worry terribly about filling each lifter full before installation. That job belongs to the oil pump. Just get as much in them as you can without making them too stiff to install without difficulty.

Thanx, duxthe1 for your explanation. That makes perfect sense. Does that tiny ball in the bottom act as a type of metering valve that only allows a certain amount of oil to escape as the intake or exhaust valve is opened, or is it more of a constant minute flow determined by actual oil pressure?

Its a check valve that lets the lifter fill but not push oil back to the supply under the pressure of valve actuation.

I dont think there is any way oil can replenish inside the lifters once it is empty after the spring goes weak inside .

I would have thought there is no spring in them.
