What are these vents in the trunk?

Hey everyone! On my 92 300E, there are these rectangular vents in the trunk behind the trunk paneling. What do they do? I had taken off the bumper to fix some rattles, and it seems that the vents are rattling as well, but I could'nt hear them previosly because the chrome trim was rattling louder. Btw, I am trying to keep my trunk from rattling as I put in a couple 10s and at medium listening levels, the bass inside is great, but on the outside my car sounds like its gonna fall apart. If these vents are sacrificable, I think ill take some great stuff to em and seal them up.
