Stuck Glow Plugs, Please Help
Hello All I just bought a 1977 240D and am trying to change the glow plugs. But they are stuck. Anyone have any ideas? I can unscrew them but the centers don't turn and the outside part comes off leaving the center part still in the hole and wont budge. Please help. The Chiltons manuel is no help
 I did do a search and found where 1 person used pliers to pull them out. I tryed that with no luck at all zero movment. the car has been setting for 6 years Thank you. Last edited by Datsun660Z; 07-08-2002 at 07:01 PM.

Stuck plugs
I have the same problem with the #2 & #4 plugs in my car. I have tried lots of things and have read the posts. One says to wiggle the heck out of it and then use pliers. I even rigged a leverage bar to no avail. I have backed them out and cranked the engine over hoping to 'blow' them out still no luck. I don't know what to do or say except keep trying and let me know when you get them out and how you did it. LOL

So far, I haven't been confronted with this problem, but from your description, it would be my guess that the units are being held in place by burned carbon.
If it were mine, I would try something like penetrating oil, diesel fuel, etc. to soak into the carbon and soften it. I would keep adding the solvent and, after giving it time to soak through, again try moving the frozen part. It may take a while and repeated efforts, but hopefully, it will eventually come out. Only one more, maybe. If you can see the carbon surrounding the center section of the plug, you might try digging into it with an awl or a small screwdriver. If you can get some of it removed this way, the penetrating oil might then be able to reach the deep part or, depending on how deep it is, you might actually reach the bottom of the plug.
Be careful in digging.....try to stay close to the glow plug part and avoid contact with the surfaces of the engine as much as possible. Even if you are successful in removing the plug, you are going to have to remove all that carbon before installing new plugs. There is a special reamer tool to remove carbon from glow plug holes. Expensive, but very well may be necessary. Again, hope this might be of help and good luck.
