Release of service records

As I am not the first owner of my 1987 420 sel,I requested the service records from the dealership it was purchased at and serviced at.The service manager informed me that they could not do this since they were not allowed to release such information. Can anyone tell me why this is?I do not want to know the previous owners, just what was done to my vehicle!Chunky:confused:

It may be a dealership policy to restict such info or perhaps it comes from higher up - MBUSA. Perhaps M.B.DOC would know.

I bought a used Honda for my step-son years ago from a local Honda dealer. I requested service info from where the vehicle was originally purchased and received printed copies in the mail from that dealer. The original owners name, address, etc. had been crossed out with a marks-alot.

I attempted to get all the service records on my MB from two different dealers, and was told the same story.

Service / repair records stay with the owner, not the car.

You will be able to get a VMI, vehicle master inquiry, which will show you the work done under recall / warranty.

I used a chicken and egg argument with my dealers, if they want me to spend money with them, then I'll need to know what has and has not been done to the car. I do have two local dealers to pit against eachother. They complied.
