4MATIC manual engagement--has anyone done this?

I've been Googling for about half an hour and I cannot find any threads, blog posts, or otherwise about anyone bypassing the 4MATIC brain and engaging the solenoids via switch to manually bias the t-case and lock the rear diff.

This seems eminently doable to me, since the whole thing is controlled via solenoid-actuated hydraulic valves, and since I'm picking up an $800 300TE 4M tomorrow, it's relevant to my interests since I cannot imagine the system is functional.

If no one has done it...I may just have to be the pioneer.
