w201 center console replacement

Hi all,

After nearly a decade of holding window switches in with fishing wire, I'm finally ready to replace my 1993 Sportline's center console panel (201 683 02 00). The problem is, the Sportline has the carbon trim, whereas most parts out there seem to be wood.

As far as I see it, I have three choices:
1. Take the tabs from the unused switches at the bottom of the board, break them off, and plastic cement them into where the tabs up top are missing. I've seen this recommended before, but I'm hesitant. Feels like a very temporary solution.
2. Replace the entire board with one in wooden trim, then fork out money for the stick-on carbon trim that can be bought after-market. Definitely the most expensive option.
3. Replace plastic backing piece (such as here). Use my existing board, pry off the broken plastic and adhere the new one in its place.

I'm leaning toward #3, but my question would be, how best to adhere the new panel to the board? Do I use staples as with the original? Or just glue it?

Anyone have any experience with this?
