I have been researching this problem but have come up empty on a resolution. Car is a 2005 E320, was our daily driver but had not been driven regularly in a few months. Car has been dead reliable. I moved the car a couple of weeks ago and all was well. Today I moved it into the shop to do some routine maintenance on it to get it ready for daily driver status again. Instrument cluster suddenly completely dead. First thing I checked were the 2 fuses under the hood 52 and 64 or whatever ones they are and both are fine. Next, I disconnected the main and aux batteries for about half and hour or so then reconnected. That did not solve it. I then pulled the IC and disconnected it for a few minutes and reconnected, nothing.
Scanned the car with SDS, it will not connect to the IC at all. I started down the path of checking for voltage between pin 1 and 4 on the connector, but I need to get some sort of smaller probe to fit the small size. I did proceed with telling SDS no to no power and it basically pointed to check wiring from the sam to the IC, and to a ground point under the passenger footwell.
Of further note, a couple of says ago we got a lot of rain. Car has always sat outside and never had an issue but I did notice some water in the spare tire well of the trunk and the trunk was generally moist. I have no idea where it could be leaking. There was also some moisture on top of the battery itself. The amount of water standing in the bottom was probably less than 1/4" if I had to guess. It sure seems like a big coincidence I see a leak in the trunk and the IC dying.
So, anyone have any thoughts or ideas on where to go next? I assume the cluster itself is fine. Anything in the trunk that could have caused this?
