Dear BENZMAC,
I recently acquired a Mercedes-Benz 190e and I am also having overheating problems during Idle, I checked the Electromagnetic Clutch Fan and it doesn't seem to be engaging, I also looked at the electric fan in front of the radiator, it also doesn't come on. Next thing I did was to test the electric fan for operability, by connecting it directly to the battery, and it works, I haven't tested the Eletromagnetic Clutch Fan yet since it's hard to get at the wire. My question is, what engages the Electro and the Electric fans? Can you give me some pointers on what else I should check? what are some common problems have you found in these type of a fault? I also checked the fuse, but they are all good. One more thing I'm curious about, is the fans computer controlled? I would really appreciate any help you can offer.

Thanks,
Roy

The fan clutch does not engage until 100-105`c and it is controled from two sources. The first is the temp switch in the head(left front next to valve cover, has 3 pins)and the second is the temp switch in the a/c drier. The most common problems are 1)the fuse, I know you said you checked them but just go ahead and replace them to be sure 2) the temp switch on the cylinder head.
You can test the system from the temp. sensor on the head by unplugging the two pin plug on the temp sensor and jumping across them with a piece of wire, the fan clutch should engage (so watch you fingers!). The temp. sensor in the drier is the one with the "pig tail" on it, if you jumper a wire across the two wires the aux. fans and the engine fan should engage.
hope this helps,

Also I have seen the relay that controlls the fans go bad. If the advise of MB Medic doesn't show positive results, do as he says but also check those relays.

MB Medic and Benzmac, thanks for all the great advise, I did what you told me to do and found out that the problem was the 3 Pin thermal switch. It seemed to operate properly when I put an ohmmeter across the 2 pins, but it didn't make a good contact, some residual resistance across the contacts. So, I will go ahead and replace it. thanks again for the great advice.
