2003 Lincoln Town Car - gassy smell after shut down

Recently, when I put the 2003 Lincoln Town car in the garage and turn it off, I notice a gassy smell coming from the engine area. I've also smelled this same gassy smell from a customer's 560SEL while visiting a local mercedes mechanic's shop. Any idea what this could be? What should I look for?

Could be a gasoline leak or an evaporative system leak. Might be best to have it smoke tested in which they inject smoke under pressure into the evap system and watch for where it exits to identify the leak.

Rule out a gasoline leak pronto to avoid a fire.

Pull the engine cover and look around. You may be able to tell where it is seeping from.

I will try removing the engine cover first....if I don't see anything I will take the car to a shop for the smoke test.
